Erik Bruhn
Dancer Erik Bruhn (1928-1986) studied with the Royal Danish Ballet and joined the company in 1947, although he took frequent sabbaticals to perform with ABT, and many other companies worldwide. In 1955, he partnered Alicia Markova (1910-2004) in a flawless performance of Giselle that delighted dance critics and audiences alike. His retirement from major roles in 1972 allowed him to take on character roles until his death in 1986.
Also Born Today: Evan-Burrows Fontaine (1898-1984) was a Denishawn dancer embroiled in a lawsuit with a wealthy family. Choreographer Christopher Bruce (1945-) served as the Artistic Director of the Rambert Dance Company from 1994-2002. Contemporary dancer Louise Lecavalier (1958-) performed with company La La La Human Steps from 1981-1998.
