Born Today:
Kazuo Ohno
Iconic Butoh artist Kazuo Ohno (1906-2010) dedicated his most famous solo to La Argentina (1890-1936), the Spanish dancer he saw perform in the mid-1920s. He described his role in the piece as being both the bull and the bullfighter. It is this tension between bitter rivals that gives the work its emotional core.
Also Born Today: Dance/theatre choreographer Blondell Cummings (1944-2015) and former Artistic Director of the New York City Ballet, Peter Martins (1946-).
