Marian van Tuyl

Marian van Tuyl (1907-1987) was active in dance groups while attending the University of Michigan, and upon graduation in 1928, she began teaching dance and directing musical theatre productions at the University of Chicago, and she co-founded the Chicago Dance Council. In 1938 van Tuyl began teaching at Mills College and she helped to establish the dance program under its own department. She published Impulse: An Annual of Contemporary Dance from 1951-1970 and she was a co-founder of the Congress of Research on Dance (CORD).

Also Born Today: Ballet dancer Ferenc Nadasi (1893-1996) studied ballet as a youth with teachers Jakab Holczer and Enrico Cecchetti (1850-1928), danced with the Budapest State Opera from 1913-1921, and later became the first director of the Budapest State Ballet Institute.
