Michael Smuin

American ballet dancer Michael Smuin (1938-2007) performed with ABT and San Francisco Ballet, before taking over as Artistic Director of SFB from 1973-1985. He founded his own ballet company from 1994 until his passing in 2007. Smuin also performed and choreographed on Broadway, dancing in Little Me (1962) and directing Sophisticated Ladies (1981), starring tap dancer Gregory Hines (1946-2003) and modern dancer Judith Jamison (1943-).


Also Born Today: Actor/dancer Liliane Montevecchi (1932-2018), who danced with Roland Petit (1924-2011) and appeared in numerous movie musicals including Daddy Long Legs (1955) and Broadway shows, including Nine (1982), Grand Hotel (1989).
