Esther Rolle

Actor Esther Rolle (1920-1998) is best known for her role as Florida Evans on the TV show Good Times (1974-1979) and for her memorable appearances in movies such as Driving Miss Daisy (1989). However, before she turned to acting, she danced with the Asadata Dafora (1890-1965) dance company, Shogola Oloba, in the late 1950s and directed the company in 1960.

Also Born Today: Professor of dance Kathleen Kerr (1947-2021) taught folk dance at Oregon State University for 15 years and at the University of Northern Iowa for an additional 20, directing the UNI International Dance Theatre. Ballet dancer Ángel Corella (1975) danced with ABT and has directed the Pennsylvania Ballet since 2014.
