Yvonne Rainer
Postmodern dance iconoclast and Judson Dance member Yvonne Rainer (1934-) is best known for her rebellious “No Manifesto” listing theatrical conventions she intended to resist, including virtuosity, style, and “no to moving or being moved”. Her signature solo, Trio A (1966) can be performed by anyone and has no repeated movements. Another piece, Continuous Project, Altered Daily (1970) inspired the dance improvisation group, The Grand Union.
Also Born Today: Italian dancer/choreographer Bruno Tonioli (1955-), who choreographed stage shows, videos, and touring shows for famous musical artists such as Tina Turner, Sting, Elton John, and Duran Duran.
