Born Today:
Tilly Losch

Dancer Tilly Losch (1903-1975) trained as a ballet dancer and performed with the Vienna Opera while taking classes with modern dance pioneer Mary Wigman (1886-1973). Losch also danced in the original Broadway production of The Band Wagon (1931) with Fred and Adele Astaire and appeared in several Hollywood films. Perhaps her most enduring project was the short silent film, Dance of the Hands (1930), in which she performs an expressive dance featuring mostly hands and her face.

Also Born Today: Choreographer Molissa Fenley (1954-), first gained attention for her high-intensity choreography in pieces like Energizer (1980). She now teaches at Mills College.
