Mary Anthony
Modern dancer/choreographer Mary Anthony (1914-2014) studied with modern dance pioneer Hanya Holm (1893-1992) and later studied with another modern dance pioneer Martha Graham (1894-1991). Anthony performed with Holm’s company from 1943-1949 and appeared in the Broadway show Touch and Go (1949), choreographed by modern dancer Helen Tamiris (1905-1966). In 1956 Anthony founded her own dance company and one of her best known works is the solo Lady Macbeth. She taught with the New Dance Group starting in 1946, inspiring the next few generations of dancers and choreographers, including Donald McKayle (1930-2018), Elisa Monte (1946-), and Ronald K. Brown (c.1967), to name a few.
