Born Today:
André Levinson
Dance writer André Levinson (1887-1933) taught at the Sorbonne in Paris and wrote many books in the 1920s about influential dance personalities. He preferred the technical aspects of classical ballet rather than the expressive possibilities that were championed by his contemporary, Michel Fokine (1880-1942), though Levinson did have a fondness for modern dancer Isadora Duncan (1877-1927).
Also Born Today: Dance historian Cyril W. Beaumont (1891-1976) wrote more than 30 books on dance after seeing the Ballets Russes in 1912. He founded Beaumont Press in order to self-publish about his passion and to connect with dance practitioners. His London bookshop became the place to find books on all types of dance until it closed in 1965.
