Madhuri Dixit Nene

Bollywood dancer Madhuri Dixit Nene (1967-) trained in Kathak technique as a child and intended to study microbiology in college, but left school to pursue a dance career. She made her first film appearance in Abodh (1984), which unfortunately flopped. Her breakout role was in the film Tezaab (1988), and following its release she began starring in between three and nine films a year throughout the 1990s. In 1994, Nene (then Dixit) starred in the highest-grossing movie in Hindi Film history Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), cementing her title, the ‘Queen of Bollywood’. In 2013, she launched an online dance school, which offers live and recorded classes of Bollywood-inspired dances and fitness routines. 

Also Born Today: Dancer Meta Vidmar (1899-1975) is known as the first Slovenian modern dancer. Vidmar trained with German modern dance pioneer Mary Wigman (1886-1973) and established the first modern dance school in Slovenia.
