Born Today:
Simone Forti

Postmodern dancer Simone Forti (1935-) worked with California-based dance pioneer Anna Halprin (1920-2021) in the 1950s and moved to New York shortly before the turn of the decade, enrolling in Robert Dunn’s choreography class that inspired the explosion of postmodern dance. She began a series of gallery movement exhibitions entitled Dance Constructions in 1960, focusing on pedestrian, or everyday, movement, in turn inspiring her cohorts Trisha Brown (1936-2017), Steve Paxton (1939-), and Yvonne Rainer (1934-). Forti participated in Happenings (live multidisciplinary performance art events) and has continued to move back and forth between the two coasts to create work since the 1970s.

Also Born Today: Actor Sarah Jessica Parker (1965), who is best known for her role in the TV shows Sex and the City/And Just Like That. Parker got her start in the Broadway version of Annie (1977) and trained at the School for American Ballet. In the 80s she starred in dance movies Footloose (1984) and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (1985) before pursuing dramatic roles.
