Jacques d’Amboise

Ballet dancer and teacher Jacques d’Amboise (1934-2021) danced for NYCB, originating roles in George Balanchine’s (1904-1983) choreography including Stars and Stripes (1958) and Jewels (1967). He is also known for his performances in the film versions of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) and Carousel (1956), and for dancing in the Broadway musical Shinbone Alley (1957), along with his wife, dancer Carolyn George (1927-2009). D’Amboise is also the father of performers Christopher d’Amboise (c.1960-) and Charlotte d’Amboise (1964-). In 1976, before he retired from performing, he founded the National Dance Institute (NDI), an organization that partners with schools to provide dance lessons to students for free in the New York City area and teacher training in his teaching methods to dance teachers.
