Michaela DePrince
Ballerina Michaela DePrince (1995-) was orphaned in Sierra Leone and later adopted by a family in New Jersey. Inspired by a magazine photo, she trained in ballet and was accepted for study at the school of ballet with American Ballet Theatre. She appeared in the dance documentary First Position in 2011, joined the Dutch National Ballet company in 2013, and wrote a memoir about her journey in 2014.
Also Born Today: Early dancer John Durang (1768-1822, who was) the first recognized professional dancer in the United States and famed for his hornpipe dance. Ballerina Adeline Genée (1878-1970), enjoyed a long performing career and was instrumental in the creation of what is now the Royal Academy of Dance in London. Her name also graces a studio in the Battersea Square location and a highly-regarded international classical ballet competition. Ballet dancer Andris Liepa (1962-) is the son of former ballet dancer Māris Liepa (1936-1989).
