Born Today:
Robert Dunn
Robert Dunn (1928-1996) studied tap dance as a child and music as a college student. He studied with musician John Cage in the late 1950s and played music for Merce Cunningham’s dance classes beginning in 1958. Dunn led a series of choreography classes from 1960-1962 that inspired the creation of postmodern dance collective, Judson Dance Theatre. Dunn combined his work with Cage and Merce Cunningham (1919-2009) into compelling choreographic approaches that appealed to young choreographers Trisha Brown (1936-2017), Yvonne Rainer (1934-), David Gordon (1936-), and Steve Paxton (1939-), and revolutionized the art of dance. He went on to teach choreography at Columbia College and at the University of Maryland at College Park.
