Mata Hari
Mata Hari, the stage name of exotic dancer Margaretha Zelle (1876-1917), means “sun,” and she lived by her own set of rules during a time when most women married for social protection. She was convicted of being a spy for Germany and was executed by firing squad in France toward the end of World War I.
