David Winters
Dancer and choreographer David Winters (1939-2019) (the one in red) is best known for his role in the film version of West Side Story (1961). He also appeared in the original Broadway version and worked with choreographer Jerome Robbins (1918-1998) again in the original production of Gypsy (1959). He choreographed multiple movies starring Elvis Presley (1935-1977) and Ann-Margret (1941-), including Viva Las Vegas (1964) and he began directing later in the decade and produced a number of TV specials and films.
Also Born Today: Ballerina Therese Elssler (1808-1878), sister of Fanny Elssler (1810-1884). Both studied with Jean-Louis Aumer (1774-1833) and after retiring from the stage, Therese married a Prince of Prussia. Ballerina Jennifer Penney (1946-), danced with the Royal Ballet from 1963-1988 and is best known for creating one of the four lead roles in Gloria (1980), by choreographer Kenneth MacMillan (1929-1992).
