Born Today:
Doris Hering

Dance advocate and critic, Doris Hering (1920-2014) began reviewing dance in the late 1940s and served as the associate editor and main critic for Dance Magazine from 1951-1971. On out-of-town assignment in 1957, she discovered a strong regional dance presence in areas of the country not typically covered by New York-based publications at the time. Afterwards she began including more regional news and reviews in the magazine. She helped to coordinate existing regional ballet associations and in 1972 was named the Executive Director of Regional Dance America, and served until 1987.

Also Born Today: Triple-threat Joel Grey (1932-), who is best known for creating the role of the Master of Ceremonies in both the stage and film versions of Cabaret (movie-1972). Versatile performer Bill Irwin (1950-) is best known for being a clown and a mime, but he also displays his tap dance skills in projects such as the movie musical Stepping Out (1991). Ballerina Gillian Murphy (1979-) has danced with ABT since 1996.
