Sally Banes

Dance writer and critic, Sally Banes (1950-2020) performed with postmodern choreographers Kenneth King (1948-), Meredith Monk (1942-) and Simone Forti (1935-) before earning a PhD at NYU. Her dissertation was later published as a book in 1993 (Democracy’s Body: Judson Dance Theater, 1962–1964) and she also published a collection of her dance reviews from the Chicago Reader as Terpsichore in Sneakers: Post-Modern Dance (1980). In New York, she wrote for the Village Voice and Dance Magazine. Banes also taught at various universities throughout the country and continued to write several seminal books and compile anthologies of her reviews and essays until 2002.

Also Born Today: Dancer Sergeant Robert Sidney (1909-2008) collaborated with Corporal Nelson Barclift (1917-1993) on Irving Berlin’s all-soldier musical This is the Army on Broadway in 1942.
